Ingveldur Yr Jonsdottir

Ingveldur Yr Jonsdottir, mezzo soprano, was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. She studied singing and acting and dancing at the Musial Theatre Department at the Conservatory of Vienna in Austria and finished her Master's degree in Music Perfomance from Manhattan School of Music in New York. Her teachers were among others; Cynthia Hoffmann, Phyllis Curtin, Nico Castell and Charles Spencer. She also completed both Level One and Level Two in the Estill Voice Training Systems.
As a singing actress, Ingveldur Yr has made a name for herself with an exceptional stage presence and acting abilities both in the field of opera and musical theater. As an increasingly known recitalist, she has sung numerous recitals in Iceland, USA, Canada, France, Austria and Germany. She has also organized and performed song and storytelling programs for kindergarten and schoolchildren.
Ingveldur Yr concluded her fest contract in 1996 with the Opéra de Lyon in France, singing various leading roles such as; Dorabella (Cosi fan Tutte), Orlovsky, (Fledermaus), she sang Mother Goose in Rake´s Progress with Dawn Upshaw and Jerry Hadley in the leading roles; Second Lady (Zauberflöte) and Mercedes (Carmen) all with Maestro Kent Nagano; C minor Mass with Sir Neville Marriner and the one woman opera Miss Donnithorne´s Maggot by Peter Maxwell Davies. At the Bastille in Paris she sang the Witch in Hansel and Gretel. Other opera roles include Carmen, Preziosilla (la Forza del Destino), Olga (Eugene Onegin) and various roles in Wagner´s Ring des Nibelungen. As a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Festival, she sang Mrs. Sedley in Peter Grimes with Seiji Ozawa conducting.
Engagement in recent seasons include Baba the Turk in The Rake's Progress and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd at the Icelandic Opera; Dorabella in the renowned David Freeman production at the Icelandic Opera; Dido in Dido and Aeneas at the Reykjavik Summer Opera Festival; Lucrecia in the world premiere of The Cenci at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London; Beethoven 9th and Dvorak Mass in D Major, as well as the 2005 New Years Concert with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra; Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen at Les Boreales in France and the Berio Folksongs both at the Tanglewood Contemporary Festival and with the Caput Contemporary Ensemble in Iceland. She sings the works of the Icelandic composer Jon Leifs with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra´s most recent recording Hafis (BIS record company).
As a part of the Duo “Inga & Gurry”, Ingveldur Yr recently toured USA and Canada, where the artists were claimed by reviewers as “charming and spellbinding...Inga having one of those refined but supercharged instruments, singing with full tone, dash and utter belief.” The Duo also appeared on CBC with Joe Fingerote broadcasting a live recording from one of their recitals.
Along with her singing career, Ingveldur Yr has run her own singing school in Reykjavik for the past 12 years, as well as teaching at the Reykjavik Singing School (college level), and at the Reykjavik University. She has taught Masterclasses along with her recitals, both in Iceland, Canada and in the USA. Ingveldur recently moved to Loveland, Colorado and now also runs a private voice studio there.
